Small Steps, Big Changes

Starting a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Sometimes, it’s the simplest changes that make the biggest difference. Two key habits—eating the right portion sizes and walking regularly—can set you on the path to better health.
Many of us eat more than we actually need, not because we’re hungry, but because we’re used to oversized portions. The key to portion control is mindful eating—knowing when to stop before you feel too full. Here are some quick tips:
- Use smaller plates to naturally reduce portion sizes.
- Fill half your plate with veggies, a quarter with lean protein, and the last quarter with whole grains.
- Eat slowly. I savor five dark chocolate almonds as if it’s a bag of M&M’s heheee!
By making small adjustments, you can enjoy your favorite foods while keeping portions in check!
Walking: The Easiest Way to Get Active

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your health. Just 30 minutes a day can:
- Boost your heart health
- Improve circulation and reduce joint pain
- Support weight management and mood
If you’re just starting out, take it slow. Try a 10-minute walk after meals or park further away from store entrances. Every step counts! My workouts are brief, but effective at the gym or home. I focus on 10 min to 30 min per day.
My sons have always encouraged me to stretch every day—even if you don’t work out. Stretching in the morning and before bed is a simple way to stay flexible and feel great.
Speaking of tips, my nephew once shared this song with me, and it really left an impression. I love multiple genres of music. It can impact your workout— by setting the tone, boosts energy, and make the experience enjoyable! Mix it up depending on your routine! Personally, I love listening to Jeezy or disco at the gym—heheeee.
The Journey Starts (Again)
Honestly, this isn’t my first journey. I’ve faced weight struggles before, but living unhealthily eventually catches up with you. I ended 2024 weighing 198lbs, so I’m grateful to now be at 187lbs. Interestingly, in 2021, I was the same size, venting on social media about my “jiggly puff” (belly pouch).
This time, though, the weight feels different. It’s not just about where the fat sits; changes in my skin and hormones add to the challenge. At fifty, neglecting self-care makes things even harder. Confidence has always been my strength, but dealing with these shifts hasn’t been easy.
That said, I admire those who embrace change—I think that’s wonderful! For me, however, taking control is a priority, especially when my health is on the line. I’m fully committed to improving every part of myself.
Just know that this isn’t about drastic changes—it’s about making small, sustainable choices. By making sound decisions, you’ll build habits that lead to long-term fulfillment.
Be well, in every sense of the word.
